Popular Traditions

The Corpus Christi is one of the oldest religious celebrations in Tenerife . On the day of the celebration, bright woven carpets depicting floral designs and religious images are laid on the streets where a solemn procession passes. The procession carries the newly blessed sacramental host, the symbol of the body of Jesus Christ among us.

On the second sunday of july, La Laguna observes the Romeria de St. Benito Abad. This is a holiday that is a national tourist interest; a tradition honored as a celebration of thanks for harvests before summer. The entire celebration lasts fifteen days, during which there are various festive events.

Corazones de Tejina is a fiesta that is devoted to St. Bartolome. The first observance of this fiesta was in the town of Tejina, hence the name. On this day, large crowds gather in the streets bearing frames of wood and iron shaped into hearts. The frames are decorated with fruits on the outside and filled with grapes and unleavened bread inside. There is a procession bearing the hearts to the church.

The Santisimo Cristo is a holiday dedicated to Christ of the Lagoon. The celebration lasts for about a week in September.

In February, the town celebrates its annual Carnival. This is a week of non-stop partying and merrymaking in the streets, outdoor restaurants, pubs, and other places.
