Popular Traditions

The folks of Guimar observe the traditional Spanish holidays and festivals. In February each year, the town celebrates the Carnaval. This is a very important week-long holiday in Guimar. Throughout Carnaval week, there is non-stop partying and entertainments all over the place. People go out on the streets dressed in various shapes and colors of wear, from the casual to the classy to the downright outrageous!

After the fun and light-hearted mood of the Carnaval, the Lenten season sets in with all its solemnity. The Canary Islands being predominantly Catholic, the inhabitants of Guimar place special importance on this season. The height of the season is the Holy Week and the observance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Throughout the Holy Week, there are solemn religious functions and processions
